Pasture again - Nature film about Pásztó pasture

The "Pásztó pasture and Pannonian salt desert grassland restoration and preservation of sustainable farming methods" program offerd an opportunity to Nimfea Nature Conservation Association for the framework program, to make a 25 minutes long nature film. The film called Pasture again is there to present the remaining natural resources and wildlife around Turkeve showed through a year.

This years broods has been quite grew up to be given out after the timid wing experimenting and the nest hopping and discover their country by themselves. In the subsequent period it is worth to contemplate the areas of lawnsand grasslands,because the scarce food supply of the wetlands may force the white stork families to  lack of with locusts, or with ondatras.

Water management works are being slowly completed on the Pásztó pasture. The drainage channel on the  area created unfavorable hydrological conditions (periodic drought, rising salinity) and induced changes in vegetation. Another drawback of the the channel was that it  prevented the movement of the animals in the grazing area.

The characteristic of this summer's intense heat sucked the last drop of moisture from the pasture. We almost forgotten the sight of freshly green grass, the scent of fresh grass,when in mid-August came the long-awaited rainy days, which brought back life into the tired-yellowish Pásztói pasture.

During trips in the Pásztó pasture you should lokk with open eyes around the building Hidegnevelde and surrounding barren areas trampled by animals. Two popular songbirds can be observed in these places, one is because of its voice interesting for us, the other because of its appearance.

In these days started the perhaps most paste-looking pasture plant of the saffron Centaurea (Centaurea solstitialis) blooming. Bright lemon yellow blooms from the bottom by long, sharp thorns embraced, the plant reaches one meters  we recognize it by it's grayish-downy stems and leaves.

Ornithogalum brevistylum blooms in quantities

Who recently traveled the roads with open eyes or was just hiking in nature, the place certainly has encountered a surprisingly large amount of tall flowering plants (Ornithogalum brevistylum). This plant with it's tiny petals, but rather high growing flowers is the typical bulbous plant on forest-steppes. Another name refers to the slender bird milk,because of its milk white color of flowers and stamens.

Under the framework of the winner of the LIFE+ program "Nature" East-Bakony (LIFE07 NAT/H/000321) and the Hungarian Little Plain sand land (LIFE08 NAT/H/000289) a konferenz called "Natural conservation on millitary owned areas" took place, wich was a collabaration by the Ministry of defence, the VERGA Veszprém forestry company,the Balaton Uplands national park Directorate, the Budapest Forestry Company, the Fertő-Hanság National Park Directorate and the Aquaprofit Engineering, Consulting and Investment Company.

On our visit to Pásztó pasture we observed the intresting lifestyle of one of our songbirds, the lesser gray shrike (Lanius minor). All in all four speciemens were staying at the time on the established artificial breeding colony by the boundary of the pasture, where we installed nestings type D, which were popular for the European Roller (Coracias garrulus), the Long-eared Owl (Asio Otus) and two kestrel species  (Faco tinnunculus, F. vespertinus) following.

After the winter season the animals are grazing with  full number under the rehabilitation program. By the chewing of horses, cattle, buffalo and racka sheep and the trampling of them proper the environmental conditions, in contrast to the state of the lawn mowing thanks to intensive treatment interventions used in the program is optimized, it becomes more natural.

Pásztó offers more nest sites to our colorful birds

In this period, after their long African journey the European roller (Coracias garrulus) and Red-footed Falcons (Falco vespertinus) are arriving to us. The red-footed falcon is nesting in colonies, it's our strictly protected bird of prey.

On this illustrious day the Nimfea Nature Consevation Association had pupils as guest. The location was not as usual the Fekete István Educational Center, but the Pásztó pasture.
Because the rehabilitation of the lick's habitat is long since in progress, it's capable to feed those birds wich prefer grassy habitat, just as the roller (Coracias garrulus) and the bird of the year, the Hoopoe (Upupa epops).

Ground arthropod community structure and its change at the plain grasslands of the pasture of Pásztó and its surroundings with special regard to Ground beetles (Coleoptera, Carabidae).
The research of arthropod communities at the grasslands of salt steppes at the pasture of Pásztó near Túrkeve was carried out at eight sampling places of four localities.

The saker falcons of Pásztó are preparing for nesting

End of january, in februar beginns the breeding period of the saker falcon (Falco cherrug). This endangered specie starts to breed the earliest. In these days you can capture the mating flight of the mates, and also how they agressivly defend they territory from other birds of prey while they're trying to chase them away.

We realised reaping and greazing on the project field as an extensiv agricultural practice. To acces this okologycal condition we used the several conservationist methods mosaik-like considered to the capacity of habitat.
The point is that these methods change in time and space , the grazing i shappening with not only one domesticate: the habitat rehabilitacion is hppening with help of 100 racka sheep, 10 horses, 15 hungarian mottled cottles, 10 hungarian grey cottles and 5 cottles.

The sales contract was signed on the 12 of january by the Herman Otto Nature Preservation Club.The buying of the property was nessasery because of the growing population of the racka sheep stock.
By favour of the LIFE+ program the 'Hidegnevelde' is running with 100 percentage capacity, so we needed another building for the animals.We choosen the farm because of it's good state of preservation and because of it's neighbooring situation.

What (or who?) is the biggest proof how big Pásztó pastures role  in the okological system is, than Dalma, the white stork fitted with a satellite radar.
Dalma demonstrated us in august, that the territories of Natura2000 are not only able for agricultural activitys but they offer habitat for the wildlife, no matter if we speak about locally reproducing animals or migrating visitors.

Because of the Rural Development and Land Management Ltd. of Alsó-Berettyó the grazing keeps constans in the winter time too in Pásztó pasture. In the year 2011 the main profile on the common grazing fields is grazing with the indigenous animals.

 The Nimfea Nature conservation association begun with the reconstruction of the Pásztó pasture in the boundary with the help of the European Union in 2011.
The territory was used for grazing but the decrease of the animal population was unfavorably  for the condition of the lick.
As mechanical reaping spread the territory begun to be weedy, so the bird of prey who used to brood there dropped away.

Pásztó pasture is well known by every single citizen, wich territory is under local protection.It is classified as a meadow and grazing (sheep, horse, cottle) and it is used like that.
Unfortunately the area became more and more salinisied, it's water balance was destoyed by effects of river regulation and hydraulic systems.

Pásztó-puszta fás sávjaiban több kékvércse család fészkel, az általunk kihelyezett odúkba. A kék vércse (Falco vespertinus) ragadozó madarunk, melynek veszélyeztetettsége összefügg a vetési varjak gyérítésével, a legeltető állattartás és legelők melletti fás csoportosulások eltűnésével.

On 20th May we went back to Pásztó pasture to check  the 5 corn bunting eggs, which we found a week ago on the pasture. The young birds hatched from eggs, but unfortunately only two chicks survived.

We can meet him on dry grasslands and meadows. It is a Pannonian endemic species, slender, many-stemmed, many-flowered perennial plant. It blooms from May to August.

Area measurement

On 12th May we held a field visit on Pásztó pasture. Area measurements were carried out with GPS and electric fences were placed on the site. On the fenced areas we're going to mow, and racka sheep, and hungarian cattle will also graze the area.

St. George Day

On 26 th April St. George Day was held by the Nimfea Environmental and Nature Conservation Association.
Numbers of trades were presented in the park of Túrkeve like: crafts, leather goods makers, blacksmiths, embroiderers, pachwork, rope makers, syrup makers, soap makers, and handicraft workshops were held for interested participants.
